Karamoja ! Uganda's Land of Warrior Nomands

About the Book

Karamoja: Uganda's Land of Warrior Nomads

Karamoja WarriorWelcome to a new standard and progressive style of of Africa photography and culture books. Karamoja: Uganda's Land of Warrior Nomads comes at a critical time in the history of the Karimojong, who have been misunderstood and persecuted for over a century and who live in a region tormented by cattle raiding, drought and underdevelopment.

Karamoja stands at the forefront of creative works that drive us to appreciate the full depth and dynamism of traditional African cultures. The ethnographic stories and images challenge us to look beyond stereotypical depictions of indigenous and traditional societies as victims of disaster or objects of exoticism. We see the Karimojong as real three-dimensional people.

Bleeding a bullNearly 10 years in the making, the book offers a journey into the culture, history and everyday life of the Karimojong through evocative images by National Geographic photographer, David Pluth, and dramatic stories inspired the real events in Karamoja, as written by a Karimojong journalist, Sylvester Onyang, and an American writer, Jeremy O'Kasick.

As David Pluth noted in the book's Foreword:

“Our efforts in this book are to present a few small pieces of Karamoja — often in its more remote and traditional corners.  They are things that we found visually exciting or strange and interesting.  This is by no means a complete catalogue or explication of Karimojong culture and society.  It is an imperfect visual record, a snapshot in time of a culture bridging between an ancient past and the unknown future.”

Karamoja GothicStories and images explore everything from Karimojong traditional religion to concepts of beauty and justice, from child rearing to mysticism of the gun. The book tackles the tough issues surrounding cattle raiding and education in Karamoja balanced with chapters on traditional medicine and love and marriage. Ultimately, we hope the stories and images can offer some greater understanding Karamoja and the Karimojong and, thus, subsequent hope for Karamoja's tomorrow.
